Mauritius biodiversity news

On 3rd October, we reported on the struggle of our friends on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean against a road development bound to irreversibly destroy endemic species in the South Eastern part of the country.

Well, local environmentalists are now celebrating: in a recent interview Navin Ramgoolam, the Prime Minister of the small island-state has announced that the project was brought to a halt. Alerted by the protests, he went to check out the place with his own eyes, and his own heart apparently: "I have been moved by the beauty of this place. And I say it clearly: I have no doubt that this place must and will be preserved." Posted by Picasa
