Europe is home to some of the largest fishing fleets in the world, including some that are dedicated to catching sharks, recalls Oceana. The lack of shark management in the European Union has led to a drastic decline in European shark populations. The European Shark Week will serve to denounce this alarming situation, the role of Europe in the trade of sharks and shark-derived products (one third of the shark fins sold in Hong Kong comes from the European Union fleet!), and European laisser-faire's worldwide impact on sharks around the world.
