Heads up on Antarctic shipping

Good op'ed in the BBC Green Room by our friend Jim Barnes of ASOC, on the need to severely restrict shipping in Antarctic waters.

ASOC is calling upon the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to take action at the meeting of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) this week in London.

As ASOC recalls, the Antarctic environment has narrowly escaped several recent shipping-related marine environment disasters.

The biannium 2007-2008 is marked by the International Polar Year. With the Arctic and Antarctic environments under threat more than ever due to the impacts of climate change on the polar regions, IMO would be wrong to burry its head under the ice.
