Wake up

On the eve of the UN Summit on Climate Change in New York and before this week's G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, Monday 21 September has been earmarked as the Day of the Global Wake Up Call, a civil society bid to raise the alarm.

Less than 80 days before the Copenhagen meeting of the Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change convened to adopt the "Kyoto II" agreement, world leaders show signs of being asleep.

There is an impressive list of initiatives of all sorts, small and big, virtually everywhere in the world tomorrow. The Wake Up Call is meant to be a catalyst for a real grassroots movement in favour of a fair, effective and binding new climate treaty.

I'm in Madrid tomorrow; I'll join Coalición Clima, a platform I'm working with in Spain on behalf of Tcktcktck.org, at the Puerta del Sol (the Gate of the Sun , a very appropriate location from which to demand that priority be given to clean energy).
