Whales in the fog

The Secretariat of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has just announced that a meeting specially dedicated to the future of the international whale conservation regime will take place 6-8 March outside Heathrow airport in the Marriott Renaissance Hotel.

One rarely goes by choice to these airport hotels. Normally one ends up there when flights are grounded by fog, or because of overbooking.

I'm not sure whether the problem with the IWC is overbooking (there are different points of view on whether it's fair and good that so many countries and organisations are involving themselves in the whaling issue), but it certainly has to do with fog: there is lack of clarity as to where the IWC is going.

It's also interesting that the hotel is called Renaissance. I'm not entirely sure whether a rebirth of the IWC is possible. But it's certainly worth a try.
