Welcome to Santiago

Two NGOs are greeting delegates with billboards outside the airport in Santiago where I arrived this morning to attend the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

Welcome to whale-friendly Chile, says Greenpeace.

Chile is watching whales, and you?, says IFAW [actually the words in Spanish on the poster are more pertinent: América Latina cuida a las ballenas, ¿y tú? : Latin America protects whales, and you?].

Meanwhile, George Bush and John McCain have launched a new campaign to end the 27 year old ban of offshore oil drilling in US coastal waters.
