This funky photo of Kelly and me was taken last night in front of the building where the Internationl Whaling Commission is holding this week its annual meeting on the island of Madeira, Portugal. I think it is the second time the IWC is meeting in a casino (they did previously three years ago on the Caribbean Island of St Kitts and Nevis; I'm told they also met in a disco in Iceland some years ago.)
Coinciding with the opening of the annual meeting today, the BBC has publshed a piece I'd prepared last week with thoughts on a possible way forward for whale conservation.
But I won't gamble on the chances the scenario I describe has to take place. Not yet at least.
