No crisis without opportunity?

President Jacques Chirac just appointed Dominique de Villepin as France's new Prime Minister.

When I read last year Dominique de Villepin's book "Le Requin et la Mouette", I was positively impressed.

Way above the mediocre standard average politicians have got us acostumed to.

I even thought "well, if he makes it to the presidential race, maybe I'll vote for him!" (But let's not jump too fast, we'll see).

In the back page of the book, I wrote: "Omissions: Osirak, Chirac/Saddam in the 1970s (of course); NPT Nuclear Weapons States obligations under Article VI; French role in Israel nuclear weapons programme development; no mention of the role of agriculture export subsidies in blocking progress in poverty erradication and development". But the rest was really allright; and even inspiring sometimes.

And of course, we were all impressed (and proud as French people) when, as Foreign Affairs Minister, he took on Colin Powell and Bush at the UN Security Council in the winter of 2003.

With this French referendum on the EU Constitution, traditional political divides have exploded more than ever before; let's see what de Villepin makes of it.

The World Watch Institute has just announced the publication of Vital Signs 2005. Together with their State of the World yearbook, Vital Signs is one of the best eco user-friendly periodic publication that exists. See the last one for example.

What is more, the electronic bulletin and chats of the World Watch institute are very good.

Their bulletin is one of the very few e-newsletters that never gives me the feeling that I got trapped into a spam scam. I always read it with interest, and sometimes with delight.

Camille et ses copains exposent à Paris

Camille Goujon m'a envoyé ce "carton électronique" pour le vernissage de l'exposition collective à laquelle elle participe à Paris, vendredi 27 mai de 19 à 22 heures, 10-14 rue du Général Lassalle, 75019 Belleville.

Les oeuvres de Camille contoieront celles de Constantin Alexandrakis, Luc Arasse,Cyrpien Chabert, Andrea Crews, Pauline Curnier, Sophie Keledjian, André Panibratchenko, Voin de Voin et Charles Lopez.

La dernière fois que j'ai vu Camille, c'était il y a un peu plus d'un an, losqu'elle vivait à Los Angelès. Etudiante dans une école de Beaux-Arts hollywoodiens, elle avait une vieille bagnole-épave pas possible avec laquelle elle visitait tous les week-ends les déserts des alentours et où elle se passionnait pour Mr. Sponge, le personnage de comic. Je crois qu'elle pensait que la passion des Américains pour ce personnage en éponge avait à voir avec leur crainte refoulée de manquer d'eau dans un avenir proche.

Elle est aussi la mère et la complice de Jean Bon, son inséparable cochon en rondelles de jambon qui fit scandale au Salon de l'Agriculture il y a quelques années.

Quelles surprises nous réservera-t-elle cette fois-ci à Belleville?

Los graffiteros nunca mueren

De acuerdo, bajo el termino "tag", "graffiti", o pintura mural urbana, hay de todo.

Pero si no estas convencido de que los autenticos graffiteros (no vandálicos) forman un movimiento artistico que deja huellas, pasate por la nueva exposición de unos chicos de mi barrio que en los últimos años han puesto mucho arte y mucha alegria sobre los muros de Madrid.

Se trata de una exposición compartida que bajo el título, ROOTS, RAÍCES COMUNES recoge obras de Rubén Martín de Lucas (rDick, del grupo Boa Mistura) y Juan Pedro Farias (Basto, del grupo DGP).

Así se describen ellos:

"Dado que las vanguardias siempre fueron marginadas y maltratadas en sus comienzos no sería de extrañar que las vanguardias del futuro estén compuestas por los que hoy son profundamente incomprendidos y "maltratados", los graffiteros. Un movimiento mucho más amplio y desarrollado de lo que cabe imaginar cuyo polo altruista, el artístico, sufre de la incomprensión generada por su polo opuesto, el vandálico".

"En los años presentes y venideros tendremos oportunidad de ver como artistas cuyas raíces se hunden en el graffiti, algunos entregados por entero al arte como en el caso de Rubén Martín (ingeniero de caminos), obligados como todo el mundo a subsistir, aparecen también en nuestras galerías comerciales, con propuestas, bien, totalmente disociadas de lo que es su trabajo en la calle (rDick), o bien, fuertemente influidas por éste (Basto)".

A mi me gustan estos chicos. Hace años que desde las ventanas del autobus, yo sigo sus obras en los muros de Madrid.

Elegida hace dos años en un extaño golpe manejado por unos promotores inmobiliarios amigos de J.M. Aznar, la Presidenta de la Comunidad de Madrid Esperanza Aguirre vuelve a la carga con su proyecto de autovia en el Gran Oeste de la Provincia de Madrid para urbanizar los alrededores de "los Pantanos", el Valle del Tietar y Gredos.

Valle del Tietar en Peligro

Nuestro amigo Luis Santiago Cano, uno de los grandes especialistas mundiales de la cigueña negra nos manda desde su residencia en La Adrada (Valle del Tietar, Provincia de Avila, Unión Europea (parece mentira), Planeta Tierra (sí, sí, parece mentira, digo), el mensaje que reproducimos a continuación (los enlaces han sido seleccionados por mí con prisas):

A principios de mes salió en el Diario Oficial de la Provincia de Ávila (BOPA nº 1095/05) el anuncio que se encuentra a exposición pública la modificación puntual del Plan Parcial "Monteverde" de La Adrada. Para quienes son de acá, decir que es el famoso proyecto de la urbanización Montelargo, justo pegado al río Tiétar.

He revisado el proyecto, y resulta que además de que el disparate ambiental es mayúsculo, no tiene pies ni cabeza. Aparte que el proyecto se localiza en la Área Crítica de Cigüeña Negra Av-06 (ORDEN de 27 de noviembre de 2001), que se localiza dentro del área de aplicación del Plan de Recuperación del Águila Imperial Ibérica (DECRETO 114/2003), y que es posible que no cumpla la Ley 11/2003 (lo estoy consultando y estudiando en estos momentos), pasa que que es un gran timo, y me explico.

Uno de los condicionantes para que se aprobara esta modificación, es que se diera suministro de agua a estas más de 100 parcelas de 1000 metros cuadrados. Un estudio de 1999 de la empresa de aguas SUGESUR, certificaba que podía abastecer de agua con un caudal de 3,5 metros cúbicos/día a cada parcela. Desde 1999, la demanda de agua no ha hecho nada más que aumentar en el pueblo (incremento del número de viviendas en torno al 15% solamente en el 2004), y no se han ido acondicionando las infraestructuras de abastecimiento de agua a este crecimiento.

En lo que se refiere a este proyecto, el estudio de viabilidad de 1999 de SOGESUR, y sobre el cuál se basa realizar esta modificación puntual del Plan Parcial (es decir, que se abastezca de agua a este nuevo núcleo urbano a 4 Km de la localidad de La Adrada) no es válido puesto que no está actualizado a la realidad actual.

Lo más probable es que si se llega a aprobar esta modificación puntual del Plan Parcial, no haya abastecimiento de agua suficiente para este enclave urbano, y menos en años de sequía como éste.

Por eso, os animo a los que sois o habéis crecido en La Adrada, o a los que os mueve un interés de Conservación, que os animéis a presentar las alegaciones que estiméis oportunas sobre esta Modificación.

Judges for Sale

A couple of months ago in Nairobi, friends from Kenya gave me this poster. "Why Bother Hiring a Lawyer when you Can Buy a Judge?".

It is a good reminder that what we take for granted here in the priviledged North is not so obvious for the vast majority of people on the planet.

But what I like best about this poster is that it should also remind us that it is risky to take for granted things such as basic human rights.

When we forget that we are able to enjoy those rights, only because someone struggled for them in the past, then they become endangered.

Our friends in the USA are starting to realise this.

Journée Contre le Culte de la Bagnole

J'ai le souvenir d'avoir toujours detesté les bagnoles, même dès mon plus jeune âge (ça puait). Mais bien sûr c'est il y a tout juste 40 ans jour-pour-jour que ce rejet est devenu vital pour moi, à tel point que je n'ai jamais essayé de passer mon permis de conduire (parce que je n'ai jamais voulu prendre le risque de causer un accident de bagnole à mon tour).

Je suis content de savoir que je ne suis pas seul à combattre la bagnole individuelle, même si nous faisons encore aujourd'hui figure d'hérétiques dans un monde où celle-ci représente encore un objet de culte.

Regardez ce blog anti-bagnole; je ne sais pas si c'est encourageant, mais ça mérite d'être encouragé.

Free "Diego Garcia"

For approximately the last two years, many of us have been receiving countless emails and accounts from our friend Martini, about the plight of the people of the Chagos islands, better known as Diego Garcia since the UK and US military took them over in the 1960s and dumped their legitimate inhabitants out, on Mauritius and the Seychelles with no care, no consultation, no compensation, no nothing.

Thanks to the campaign that is emerging to help and support the original inhabitants of the Chagos islands to be able to go home (and throw the occupiers out, where they belong), there has been a steady amount of press coverage in the last year or so. But as a French man, I was glad today to read a moving full page in Le Monde, which I encourage all those who read French to read, and circulate.

Is Philip Morris turning Neo-Nazi?

Getting away with murder is part of Philip Morris/Altria's core business, we all know this. (4.5 million human deaths per year worldwide due to tobacco smoking).

But this week in Madrid (Spain) they really went over the top, with their "Pure Race" posters (see photo).

Playing with the two different meanings of the word race is particularly unacceptable this week, on the 60th anniversary of the fall o the Nazi regime!

What is Philip Morris trying to say?

Even if the double-meaning of the word race is a coincidence, and they did not mean it, this says a lot of Philip Morris' so-called corporate social responsibility!

By the way, the US have still not ratified the World Health Organisation's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control ! Could this be because Philip Morris is the largest donor of the US Republican Party? Our friends from the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids seem to think so.
Check the chart on their website about the contributions received from tobacco companies by Republican and Democrat candidates in the US. Interesting how the political system can be corrupted by what is perhaps (with the arms trade) the least ethical of all legal businesses.

Bob is Alive

When I tried to google up a photo of Bob Hunter tonight shortly after I heard of his death, I was amazed at how many people are or have been called Bob Hunter.

"Our" Bob was really a good man. A real giant as I wrote in the note I sent to the Greenpeace website.

A lot of people will remember him in the days and years to come, and beyond. If Greenpeace ever had a founding father, Bob was the one. Rex Weyler's recent book on the early days of Greenpeace is a great tribute to Bob's legacy.

The first time I met him and his wife Bobbie, I was very young (it must have been 1977). They had good reasons to doubt whether all these young people who were approaching Greenpeace (often with dodgy or limited credentials), and who were trying to mimick them, would ever deliver anything good. So they were keeping a reasonable distance, but at the same time they were always correct, encouraging, and never dismissive. That's why they stand out as the founding fathers.

The context is different now. But when young people approach me because they believe that I can help them, I try to remember that I was lucky to be given a chance thirty years on, and that I must not break the chain. Hundreds of us are carrying the legacy, and people wanting and able to take it from us are thousands. That's enough to build an "army".
